mcl ben franklinSHREWSBURY, NJ - Founder of the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1791, Benjamin Franklin, and 21st century Shrewsbury Mayor Donald Burden were among the several hundred who celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Eastern Branch facility of the Monmouth County Library Sunday. Franklin’s company was the first lending library in what is now the United States.

Burden was one of six local mayors who presented commendations or resolutions honoring the occasion at a gala ceremony which also included the presentation of an American flag by Congressman Chris Smith which he had flown over the Capitol on Oct. 13, the anniversary of 1968 when the library formally opened.
