Jerome Kern music at the library

MANALAPAN – The music of Jerome Kern will be at the Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes dr., Wednesday, July 11 at 2 p.m. when John Ench presents a lecture and song afternoon of entertainment.

Ench, a graduate of Rutgers University, spent more than 40 years on Wall Street primarily in the Information Technology Sector. He now devotes his time to developing and presenting programs connected with the entertainment business, with an emphasis on nostalgia. A resident of Marlboro, he is an instructor at OLLI, the Orsher Lifelong Learning Institute, a program at Rutgers University. He has taught several classes focusing on entertainment and has presented the Jerome Kern program at libraries and senior centers throughout the area.

Kern, one of the nation’s foremost composers of music for both theater and screen  in the early part of the 20th century, wrote more than 700 songs which were used in more than 100 different stage presentations. He also collaborated with leading lyricists of the era, including Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin and Oscar Hammerstein.  His career, which spanned four decades before his death in 1945, created the model for later Broadway musicals. Some of his best-known works include Show Boat, Ol Man River, and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.

No reservations are necessary for the July 11 presentation, which will include both music and a discussion of Kern’s work and life. There is no admission fee and the public is invited to attend.
